The Telecom regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has ordered the telecommunication companies to provide 30 days validity for prepaid recharge plans. So, lets discuss this new rule by TRAI.
Prepaid plan validity increased from 28 days to 30 days
Currently, the telecommunication companies provide prepaid recharges with 28 days validity. This is very inconvenient and costly for customers as it leads to 13 recharges in the year instead of 12 recharges. However, these so called “monthly recharges” only provide 28 days of validity instead of 30 days which is quite misleading.
So, TRAI’s this move will reduce the number of recharges done by the customer and provide a more honest marketing.
TRAI said in the notification,”Every Telecom Service Provider shall offer at least one Plan Voucher, one Special Tariff Voucher and one Combo Voucher having a validity of thirty days.”
The TRAI notification mandates the telcos to offer one Plan Voucher, one Special tariff Voucher and one Combo Voucher. This can be renewed on the same date of every month.
Further, the telcos are mandated to comply with the new order within 60 days from the day of notification.
TRAI’s new order is a very welcome decision. There are numerous complaints from consumers regarding the tariff offers 28 days validity marketed as monthly plans by TSPs.
TRAI said in the notification,”With the enactment of the amendment, telecom consumers will have more options to choose service offerings of appropriate validity and duration. This would also facilitate consumers in making a more informed tariff-related choice.”
Conclusion
The Indian telecommunication market is very competitive. This competition also leads to extensive marketing. However, many customers are not aware of the proper details of the plan like considering a 28 days recharge plan as a monthly plan. So, this new order by TRAI can clear the confusion regarding the plan validity. However, the awareness should also increase among the common customers regarding the products that they are buying.
