Xiaomi 12 Series: Camera Details
Xiaomi 12 series are the much-awaited flagships that come from the brand Mi. Since it’s a flagship series. The camera quality in all the phones will be incredibly good. However, Mi is providing two different sensors for these phones:
- IMX 766 ( Xiaomi 12) is a upper midrange sensor and already seen on many smartphones priced over 25k.
- IMX 707 (Xiaomi 12 Pro) is a upgraded version of IMX 700. It is the latest sensor from Sony. IMX 700 is also used in Huawei P50 series
Xiaomi 12 series: PDAF info
Phase Detection Auto Focus is generally used in modern smartphones to make a particular object would be clear to the image sensor without any manual efforts
Both the sensors IMX766 and IMX 707 have Phase Detection Auto Focus (PDAF) support. However. The latest IMX 707 has a Dual focus PDAF in comparison to IMX 766’ standard PDAF.
The Dual Pixel PDAF is an update to the standard PDAF that has been widely used in smartphones over the years. In general, the PDAF uses the left and right-facing pixels in the lens to tell if the photo is in focus or not.
In the latest dual-pixel PDAF, every single pixel is used for phase detection and focus calculation. This reduces autofocus latency to a few milliseconds and also improves accuracy over time.
Xiaomi 12 series: LENS information
IMX 707 & IMX 766 both are 50MP sensors from the company SONY. However, there are some differences in their pixel& individual lens size. The Sony IMX 707 offers 22% larger pixels than the IMX 766. IMX 766 have 1.0 µm pixels which grow to 2.0µm with pixel binning while IMX 707 offers 1.22 µm pixels which can grow up to 2.44µm with pixel binning. Furthermore, IMX 707 is a 1/1.28″ sensor while IMX 766 is a 1/1.56″ sensor
Camera Similarities
- Arperture: Both IMX 707 & IMX 766 in upcoming Xiaomi 12 Series have f/1.9 aperture.
- Image Stabilisation: Both of the sensor offers Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) while recording video at 1080p.
Camera Capability
Both the image sensors come are tagged as a wide lenses but have different focal lengths. 26mm of IMX 766 vs 24mm of IMX 707. IMX 766 supports 8k video recording at 24fps with 4k at 30fps. IMX 707 leaves IMX 766 behind with shooting 8k & 4k videos at 60fps.
With a larger pixel size, IMX 707( Xiaomi 12 is capable to take more light. Hence it provides better photography at night time. Even, Xiaomi also says IMX 707 as a ‘night owl’.
Xiaomi 12 Series: Conclusion
Of course, IMX 707 is one of the best smartphone sensors available in the market at present time. However, IMX 766 will be a good choice for an upper mid-range smartphone.
