India has banned 54 apps which are of Chinese origin. This list of banned apps include popular game Garena Free Fire – Illuminate. According to various news agencies, the Indian Government has banned these apps because of security and privacy concerns.
List of 54 apps banned by India
The 54 apps banned by India include: Beauty Camera: Sweet Selfie HD, Rise of Lost Crusade, Badlanders, Viva Video Editor – Snack Video Maker with Music, APUS Security HD (Pad Version), Conquer Online – MMORPG Game, Conquer Online II, Tencent Xriver etc.
The apps banned by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology include apps belonging to large Chinese tech companies like Tencent, Alibaba, NetEase. Moreover, many apps were rebranded versions of the apps already banned by Indian Government in 2020. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) will issue a formal notification banning operations of these apps in India.
Garena Free Fire banned in India
Sea Ltd., the company behind Garena Free Fire is a Singapore based company founded by China-born founders. This company’s largest stakeholder is Chinese tech giant Tencent. Moreover, Sea Ltd. focuses on e-commerce and gaming industries.
In 2020, India banned PUBG Mobile because of privacy and security concerns. This made Garena Free Fire quite popular in India. However, there are a lot of controversies regarding the game similar to PUBG Mobile, mostly about game addiction and expensive in game purchases.
Since 12 February, Free Fire is not available to install from Google Play Store and Apple App Store. However, Free Fire MAX is still available to install on Google Play Store.
Since 2020, India has banned a lot of Chinese apps including popular apps like PUBG Mobile, TikTok, WeChat, Weibo. According to various sources, the Indian Government banned these apps because these apps were engaged in activities against the security of India.
