Generally, it’s a kind of smart glass that may change its property (color too) based on the quantity of electricity passed to it. The main component of the glass is tungsten oxide and electrolytes. The lithium-ion present in electrochromic material moves according to the supplied voltage. The glass modifies its optical properties.

This glass isn’t new, it has already used on many cars, home windows, gates, and in different places too. Now, Vivo wants it on its upcoming smartphones.

Vivo’s patient for the electrochromic glass

Oneplus Concept One

Vivo has recently showcased a video of a smartphone with electrochromic glass that may change colors with the press of a key. Within the specific video, the rear panel changes its color from pearl white to deep blue when pressing a button. The idea was based on the Oneplus concept one smartphone showcased on CES, September 2020. This phone featured electrochromic glass on the camera module that hid the camera sensor while it is not in use.

Vivo patient is somewhat completely different, whenever we will press the button the entire rear panel modifies its color. It usually takes a minute or 2 to change the color. If this panel begins to avail commercially, then there won’t be any color variants of the phone. It will depend on you that which color you want.

Its Effects on the Smartphone

  • Battery Drain: Though Electrochromic glass would require a constant voltage to maintain the color you want. It’ll cause abundant battery drain and conjointly have an effect on the battery life cycle.
  • Bulky Phones: Since the company vivo will need a separate circuit to manage colours on the rear panel. it should cause the phone to be large & thick.
  • Too Costly: As Innovations require money. The phones once launched within the market could also be costlier creating it out of the budget for some people.

Launching expected from vivo

Vivo Changing back panel

The phone was showcased in September 2020 and currently, Vivo is testing this technology. we can expect the smartphone with this glass out there in the last of 2022. this is not solely regarding the Glass on the back. It’s about the corresponding circuits and battery that need to be optimized for the smartphone to avail itself commercially.
